The Honorable Mary Ann Peters is a geopolitical and global health expert who has served as a U.S. Ambassador, global nonprofit CEO, and Provost of a professional military education institution, among numerous roles around the world.  She currently serves as Ambassador-in-Residence and Professor of Practice at the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University.

 

As CEO of The Carter Center from 2014-2020, Ambassador Peters led a global team of 3,000 mission-driven professionals to promote peace and security and eradicate diseases around the world. These included non-partisan global initiatives to strengthen fragile democracies by resolving conflict, monitoring elections and strengthening rule of law.  Ambassador Peters’ work at The Carter Center also focused global health issues, including efforts to reduce discrimination against those with mental illnesses in the U.S. and abroad.

 

Ambassador Peters earlier served as Provost and Dean of Faculty at the U.S. Naval War College, where she developed and implemented academic, research, and war-gaming strategy for the U.S. Navy’s professional  graduate school and established their Center for Cybered Conflict Studies (now the Cyber and Innovation Policy Institute).  She also served as Dean of the College of International and Security Studies for the George C. Marshal European Center for Security Studies in Germany, where she elevated focus on transnational issues, including human trafficking.

 

As a former U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh (2000-2003), senior U.S. diplomat at posts including Canada, Bulgaria, the USSR, and Burma (Myanmar), Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council, and U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Canadian Affairs, Ambassador Peters has deep experience with numerous national security, foreign policy, trade, and development issues.

 

Ambassador Peters is a member of numerous boards, including the Center for Global Health Innovation and The Asia Foundation.
