Don’t Forget To Include Local Officials In Your National Strategy

So often when we are trying to impact change at the federal level, we look to federal officials to  help us garner support for our efforts.  However, local and state leaders can often be one of your best partners – don’t forget to include them.

This concept struck me at a conference of local Honor Flight Network hub leaders held this past weekend.  There was a great presentation done by our national board leader about engaging members of Congress in support of our Veterans and our ability to honor Veterans with a special journey to Washington, DC.  Perhaps it is because I worked at the state level, running a state’s Washington, DC office, or because when I left Washington six years ago, I worked in county government in North Carolina.

I also learned from colleagues in the insurance industry a while back that local officials often become your federal elected officials.  When I worked for the Travelers, our association was intentional in developing relationships with up-and-coming state leaders who were considering runs for Congress.  We met them early and built trust with them while still serving in their states.

Regardless of the reason, I’m always conscience of including local officials in building a strategy, even for federal action.
